Coventry City Journalist Confirms Clubs Interest In 20-Goal League Two Forward

Coventry City journalist Andy Turner has confirmed the Sky Blues have placed Notts County striker Macaulay Langstaff on their radar ahead of a possible January move, via his article for Coventry Live.

The 26-year-old has been a goalscoring powerhouse for Notts County since his arrival from National League side Gateshead in July 2022, but could he be set to follow manager Luke Williams into the Championship?

Williams is expected to become the new manager of Swansea City, replacing Michael Duff whilst Langstaff has once again been heavily linked with a number of Championship clubs.

The forward has made 29 appearances in all competitions so far this season, scoring 20 goals and providing three additional assists for the football club. This works out at a goal contribution every 1.2 matches or 38 goal contributions over a 46-game EFL season.

Langstaff began his career with local side Billingham Synthonia before moving to Gateshead in February 2017. He left after 18-months to join York City before returning to the club two years later. In his final season for the club, the forward managed 28 goals in 39 league games to help the club to promotion from the National League North.

Since he arrived at Meadow Lane, Langstaff has managed a remarkable 70-goal contributions in 78 appearances, hitting 41 goals last season as the club gained promotion back to the EFL.

Coventry City are currently challenging for promotion to the Premier League once again after reaching the playoff final in May. The club are 8th in the table and three points outside of the top six.

The Sky Blues are likely to be in the market for a forward during the January transfer window for a number of reasons. Fabio Tavares is expected to depart the club on loan after recently returning from almost a year-long injury, whilst record signing Haji Wright has been deployed into his more natural left-wing position.

This leaves Mark Robins’ side with summer signing Ellis Simms and EFL veteran Matt Godden as strikers, with the pair netting just nine league goals between them so far whilst Wright alone has eight.

Speaking on the Langstaff link, journalist Andy Turner stated:

‘CoventryLive understands that the 26-year-old is on City’s radar after already scoring 20 goals from 29 appearances this season.’

It is important to note that Andy Turner doesn’t specify how many forwards are on the club’s radar, how actively they are pursuing this deal or how high Langstaff is on the shortlist.

Writer’s View

With the Sky Blues competing for the playoffs once again in the Championship and requiring another option up front, it makes complete sense that Langstaff is one of the players on the club’s radar.

It’s unclear as to his fee, although that is likely to be increased due to the nature of the January transfer window. However, the Sky Blues have money to spend, meaning finances aren’t likely to be an issue.
